Some days we all need a good belly laugh, parents included. Silly books have always been my kids’ favorites, the ones we come back to again and again. One of my kiddos sometimes has a hard time sitting for a story, but with silly books, she can sit like a champ. This list is great for kids to get their wiggles out, be interactive, and get into a fit of giggles with you. I hope you enjoy them as much as we have.
The Book with No Pictures by B.J. Novak
Don’t let the plain black and white cover deceive you, this book is hilarious. My husband and I pretty much have this book memorized. If your kids get a kick out of silly made up sounds or just hearing you say ridiculous things, they’ll be obsessed with this book.
I Say Ohh, You Say Ahh by John Kane
This title is so interactive and silly, your kids will love it! It is similar in style to The Book with No Pictures, where your kids will be saying ( or yelling) all sorts of things throughout the book. If they think talking about donkeys wearing underpants is hilarious, which come on I think all kids do, this will be a hit for them!
This book just ate my dog! by Richard Byrne
Not sure why random things eating other random things cracks kids up, but it totally does. My favorite part of this book is the illustrations. I love how it really looks like the book is eating the different things and characters. Your kids will love turning the book upside down and shaking everything out of the book and the ending is super cute also.
Open Very Carefully: A Book with Bite by Nicola O’Byrne
The cover was what drew my kids to this book. It has that little fear element in it that is just intriguing enough to grab them. This silly book features a hungry crocodile, a cute duck, and tons of interaction. Grumpy crocodiles in tutus is enough to make anyone laugh, especially a kiddo.
Nibbles- The Dinosaur Guide by Emma Yarlett
Nibbles is a little monster that always gets himself into sticky situations. In this book, he lands in the time of the dinosaurs. My dino loving 6 year old has been obsessed with this book since we got it. It mixes silly jokes and potty humor with awesome facts about dinos. I love the illustrations and interactive cut-aways and flaps.
So I HAD to add this classic silly story. I remember reading it when I was a kid and every one of my 4 kids still loves when I to read it to them. Silly old Grover is so scared for us to turn the pages because he is terrified of the monster at the end of the book. Of course, we turn the pages anyway, laughing at all the things Grover does to stop us from getting to the end of the story. Even if your kids are too old for Sesame Street they will still love this book, even my 12-year-old removes her earbuds for this one.
Little Penguin Gets the Hiccups by Tadgh Bentley
Riley (6) went on an everything penguin kick last year. When we spotted this book at the library last year she added it to her bag immediately. It became one of our favorites right away! How cute would a penguin with hiccups be?! Your kids will love trying to scare the hiccups away for penguin by yelling BOO loudly. They’ll get a kick out of the ending too, I know we did.
Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! by Mo Willems
I had to add a Mo Willems book onto this list. Our family loves all of his books but Pigeon has to be our favorite character. In this book Pigeon really, really wants to drive the bus but the driver has asked the reader to keep an eye on him. This one is great for a belly laugh!
I Am Not a Chair! by Ross Burach
We love this silly story about a giraffe and his first day in the jungle. He is having a problem, everyone seems to think he’s a chair! The illustrations are super cute, especially the facial expressions on the animals. We love how the giraffe finally finds his voice and the funny ending.
Elephant & Piggie Like Reading! – The Itchy Book! by Leuyen Pham
This book is a Mo Willems style reading, which totally drew us in because we love Elephant and Piggie books! This book is about a group of dinos with a dilemma, it is written in stone that dinos do not scratch. That creates a problem since everyone is super itchy! We loved how silly these dinos are and the way the book is written with little dialogue bubbles.
I hope your family enjoys these silly books! If you have any others that you think I should add let me know, I always love to chat books!
